Local Intelligence Symposium
November 6, 2009
Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology
Room 1005, 9am-5pm
Overview & Purpose:
The Local Intelligence Symposium is a gathering of University of Illinois faculty members from a wide range of departments and fields of study in order to foster trans-disciplinary discussion and lay the groundwork for future research and collaboration. The driving force behind Local Intelligence is the fact that while an amazing array of creative research is being done across the university, a great deal of it goes unnoticed by faculty and students due to intensive research, teaching and study schedules. For this reason, Local Intelligence provides a temporal and geographic space for communication and cross-pollination in which research and speculation from various fields of study are presented in such a way as to provoke new ways of thinking about issues of environmental sustainability, cultural production, globalization, and more.
Theme:
This year's symposium is organized around ideas, projects, research or techniques that in some way engage the built environment. Due to the cross-disciplinary structure of the program, it will be up to the participants and the audience to make connections that have not previously been made.
Format:
The suggested format for presenters is a 20-30 minute presentation designed in such a way as to provoke creative responses from the audience. This suggests a need for presenters to rethink esoteric or overly specialized language or visualizations in such a way that fosters 'intercultural translation' and exchange of ideas and information. If at all possible, it is preferred that text-laden powerpoint slides give way to more affective content such as diagrams, photos, animations, etc.
