PRESENT The unique cultural landscape of Champaner-Pavagadh is under threat of massive and rapid change brought about by the mushrooming of roadside development catering to the pilgrim traffic; and continuing environmental spoliation caused by quarrying, air pollution, and drought. Its architectural legacy is threatened by long term neglect and human abuse. The immense tanks, stepwells, and ponds that sustained the medieval cities lie dry and the elaborate rainwater harvesting system is defunct for lack of repair and due to silting. Monumental mosques with imposing domes and minarets loom out of the forest; walls and gateways appear in short stretches on the hill giving a feel for the fortification system that had made the settlements impregnable in their day. Champaner-Pavagadh, however, is a living heritage site with a resident population living in Champaner village and on Machi and Mauliya plateaus.
