Community Design Studio

The concentration in Community and Urban Landscape Design emphasizes analysis and design grounded in community engagement. Building on theory related to social and cultural issues, this concentration focuses on application through place-based design and action research. Areas of specific interest may emphasize cultural diversity, community revitalization, and social and environmental justice. Students will learn theory and models of urban design, with particular attention to the social and ecological implications. The primary scales of inquiry are the neighborhood and urban core, although issues will also engage regional concerns as well as household and home. Course requirements are interdisciplinary, drawing on architecture, planning, and other fields.
